Lessons Learned
Three Suggestions from Veteran Stepmoms
SKL's List
1) I would NOT give up my life for my husband or my stepkids. I would keep my job and maintain my interests. I would NOT get so involved in their lives that I lose myself and my own desires in life. By handing over my life to them (i.e. the one handling all family matters and keeping husband's business organized) because by nature I'm a very giving person, I lost myself. That is by far my biggest regret.
2) Know what you are getting into. Find out if the hubby-to-be is really just a playmate for his kids (due to divorce guilt or some other reason) or a father figure that disciplines because you don't want to find out later that you are the one who will be maintaining the order, doing the disciplining and dealing with the ex even if it is under the guise of your hubby. Also, learn how he responds to his ex . . . does he let her get away with everything just to try and maintain peace, do they work together decently, does he just shove everything under the carpet, etc.

3) I'll have to think about this some more...
